Logical relation (constraint)
SAT glossary · Math
Definition
What the slot must do to the sentence — extend, contradict, specify, or concede the previous clause. It is usually announced by a connective and it is the constraint that resolves the hardest items.
Logical relation (constraint) in plain English
This is about figuring out exactly what JOB a blank or transition needs to perform relative to the sentence or clause right before it: does it need to EXTEND the previous idea (add more to it), CONTRADICT it (disagree or push back), SPECIFY it (narrow it down with more detail), or CONCEDE it (acknowledge it's true but pivot anyway)? This relationship is usually signaled by a connecting word nearby, and correctly identifying which of these four jobs is needed is often exactly what resolves the hardest questions in this category.
