Words in Context
SAT glossary · Reading & Writing
Definition
Items asking which word best completes a text. The method of this book: predict the meaning from the sentence's logic before reading options, then match; the trap options are words that fit a nearby idea but not the precise slot.
Words in Context in plain English
'Words in Context' questions ask you to pick which word (out of several choices) best completes a sentence, based on the surrounding logic and meaning of the passage. The recommended method: predict, in your own head, what MEANING the blank logically needs to carry, based purely on the sentence's internal logic — BEFORE you even glance at the actual answer choices — and then find whichever choice matches that predicted meaning. The trap answer choices are words that fit some nearby, loosely-related IDEA in the sentence, but don't actually fit the exact, precise meaning the specific blank requires.
