Spring
Volume Price Analysis glossary · Support, Resistance & Breakout Mechanics
Definition
A Wyckoff term for a candle that dips below the floor of support but closes back above it; a bullish trap or test that shakes out weak sellers.
Spring in plain English
A spring is a sneaky trap. The price briefly dips BELOW a well-known support level (the "floor" where buyers usually step in), scaring nervous holders into selling — but then it snaps right back and closes above that floor, as if the dip never happened. That quick fake-out flushes out the weak sellers and lets big players scoop up their shares cheaply before the real move higher. It's like a store dropping a price for five minutes to clear out hesitant shoppers, then quietly raising it again — a bullish signal named by legendary trader Richard Wyckoff.
