Buying tail
Volume Profile Analysis glossary · Auction Theory & Market Profile (TPO)
Definition
A series of single-print prices at a session low formed by responsive buying; indicates strong institutional buy interest at the extreme.
Buying tail in plain English
During a session, price sometimes dips to a low, gets instantly slapped back up, and leaves a thin "tail" of prices that only traded once on the way down. A buying tail at the session low means big buyers stepped in fast the moment price got cheap — they wouldn't let it stay down there. It signals that serious (often institutional) money sees that low as a bargain and is defending it, like a crowd rushing to snap up a store's clearance item before it's gone, so it never really sits on the shelf.
