Day type

Volume Profile Analysis glossary · Auction Theory & Market Profile (TPO)

Definition

A classification of a completed (or developing) session by the shape of its price action and Volume Profile: trend day, normal day, normal variation day, neutral day, double-distribution trend day, non-trend day, or reversal day.

Day type in plain English

A day type is just a nickname for the overall shape a trading session takes — like how you'd label a day at the beach as 'sunny,' 'stormy,' or 'partly cloudy' at a glance. Some sessions trend hard in one direction all day (a trend day), some barely move and just chop sideways (a non-trend day), and others start one way then flip (a reversal day). Traders sort each session into one of these buckets because once you recognize the 'weather pattern' early, you get a feel for how the rest of the day is likely to behave. The label comes from combining how price moved with where the most trading volume stacked up.
