Initiative activity
Volume Profile Analysis glossary · Trading Strategies & Execution
Definition
Trading that initiates a new directional move: buying above value or selling below it. Tends to extend ranges and migrate value.
Initiative activity in plain English
Picture a price zone where a stock has been "fairly" trading for a while — call it the fair-price neighborhood, or "value." Initiative activity is when a trader deliberately steps OUTSIDE that neighborhood on purpose: buying even though price is already above fair, or selling even though it's already below. That's a sign of real conviction — someone thinks the fair price itself is about to move, not just wobble. Because these traders are actively pushing into new territory, they tend to stretch the day's range wider and drag the whole fair-price zone to a new location.
