Alternative Explanation
LSAT glossary · Logical Reasoning
Definition
A competing cause or mechanism that could produce the observed result. Ruling it out strengthens a causal argument; establishing it weakens one.
Alternative Explanation in plain English
When an argument assigns one cause, look for another mechanism that predicts the same evidence. The rival weakens the conclusion unless the argument can distinguish between them.
