Absolute contraindication
NCLEX-RN glossary · Reduction Of Risk Potential
Definition
A clinical condition or factor that renders a specific treatment or medication strictly prohibited due to an unacceptably high risk of harm.
Absolute contraindication in plain English
The nurse must withhold the treatment immediately if an absolute contraindication is present (e.g., thrombolytics in active bleeding). The main trap is treating an absolute contraindication as something that can be 'balanced' rather than as a hard stop.
