Infantilizing communication
NCLEX-RN glossary · Psychosocial Integrity
Definition
A non-therapeutic communication pattern where adult clients are addressed with simplified language, 'elderspeak,' or collective pronouns.
Infantilizing communication in plain English
Undermines client autonomy and dignity, which can lead to decreased self-efficacy and non-compliance with the treatment plan. A common mistake is assuming that 'elderspeak' is a therapeutic method for building rapport with geriatric clients rather than a barrier to dignity.
