Escalating agitation
NCLEX-RN glossary · Psychosocial Integrity
Definition
A progressive increase in psychomotor restlessness and verbal hostility that indicates a client is approaching a loss of behavioral control.
Escalating agitation in plain English
Early recognition allows for de-escalation and environmental safety interventions before the situation requires physical or chemical restraints. A frequent error is attempting to use complex logic or verbal reasoning to 'calm' a highly agitated client instead of prioritizing immediate safety and a low-stimulation environment.
