Normalcy bias from one value
NCLEX-RN glossary · Reduction Of Risk Potential
Definition
A failure in trend reasoning where the nurse accepts a current 'normal' measurement as evidence of stability while ignoring preceding data points that show a downward trajectory.
Normalcy bias from one value in plain English
Directly causes failure-to-rescue by delaying escalation; the nurse fails to recognize that a client is compensating until they reach a point of absolute hemodynamic collapse. A frequent error is accepting a blood pressure of 110/70 as 'stable' despite a heart rate of 120 (Shock Index 1.09), which identifies the specific threat of occult shock.
