Shock differentiation
NCLEX-RN glossary · Reduction Of Risk Potential
Definition
The clinical process of identifying the specific type of shock (hypovolemic, cardiogenic, or distributive) based on cues. This process guides safe therapy.
Shock differentiation in plain English
Vital because treatments for different types of shock are often contradictory; for example, massive fluid boluses can be fatal in cardiogenic shock. The tempting mistake is treating all hypotensive clients with aggressive fluids without first assessing for cues of cardiac origin or volume overload.
