Amendment in plain English
An amendment is an official change or addition to the Constitution, which is the top rulebook for how the U.S. government works. The Founders knew the country would grow and that they wouldn't get everything right the first time, so they built in a way to update the rules without throwing out the whole document, like editing a shared document instead of starting over. There are 27 amendments so far, and they include huge ones like ending slavery and giving women the right to vote. The first ten together are called the Bill of Rights.
