Federal
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Civics
Definition
Relating to the national government (not state or local).
Federal in plain English
'Federal' means it belongs to the NATIONAL government — the one in Washington, D.C. that covers the whole country — as opposed to your state or your local city government. The U.S. has these layers stacked together: local (your town), state (like Texas or Ohio), and federal (the whole nation). So a federal law applies everywhere in the country, while a state law only applies inside that one state.
