Civics
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Civics
Definition
The study of the rights and duties of citizens and how government works.
Civics in plain English
Civics is the study of how a country's government works and what rights and duties come with being a citizen — for example, how laws get made, what the President does, and why voting matters. On the naturalization test, the "civics" questions check that you understand these basics of U.S. history and government. Think of it as the owner's manual for your country: it explains how the whole system runs and what your part in it is.
