Definition
The act of freeing from slavery.
Emancipation in plain English
Emancipation means setting someone free, especially freeing people who were enslaved and forced to work with no rights or pay. The word literally means releasing someone from another person's control, like unlocking a cage and letting the person walk out as their own free human being. In American history, it usually refers to freeing the millions of enslaved Black people in the 1800s. It's one of the most important ideas in the country's story about equality and human dignity.
