Executive branch
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Civics
Definition
The branch that enforces laws: the President, Cabinet, and agencies.
Executive branch in plain English
This is the part of the U.S. government that runs day-to-day operations and makes sure laws are actually followed. It's led by the President, who is helped by the Cabinet (top advisors who each run a department) and by federal agencies (large teams handling things like the mail, taxes, or national parks). If Congress passing a law is like the coach deciding the game plan, the Executive branch is the players and staff who go out and run it every day.
