U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Civics

Definition

Essays supporting ratification of the Constitution (Madison, Hamilton, Jay - pen name "Publius").

Federalist Papers in plain English

When the Constitution was first written, Americans had to vote to approve (ratify) it — and plenty of people were nervous about it. So three supporters — James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay — wrote a series of persuasive essays explaining why the Constitution was a good idea, trying to win people over. They published them under the single shared pen name 'Publius,' a bit like posting under one username even though it was really a team. Those essays are the Federalist Papers.
