Definition
The elected leader of a state's executive branch.
Governor in plain English
A Governor is the top elected leader of a single U.S. state, kind of like a president but just for that one state (California, Texas, Florida, and so on). They lead the 'executive branch,' which is the part of government that carries out and enforces the state's laws, and they oversee things like state budgets, schools, and emergencies. Think of the country as a big apartment building: the President manages the whole building, while each Governor manages their own floor. On the test you may be asked who the Governor of YOUR state is, so learn that name.
