Normal variation day
Volume Profile Analysis glossary · Auction Theory & Market Profile (TPO)
Definition
A session in which IB is established, then price extends beyond IB in one direction by a moderate amount (typically 100%–150% of IB range).
Normal variation day in plain English
This is the 'normal day' with a twist. Again the first hour sets the Initial Balance (the opening high-to-low range), but this time price breaks out of that box in ONE direction by a moderate amount — usually stretching the range by another half to a full IB's worth before settling. Picture the early crowd drawing their box, and then a modest wave of new buyers (or sellers) shows up and pushes price out one side, but not in a stampede. It's a real directional lean without the fireworks of an all-out trend day.
