Surprise
Volume Profile Analysis glossary · Auction Theory & Market Profile (TPO)
Definition
The difference between the released ('actual') value of an economic indicator and the consensus forecast, often measured in standard deviations of the consensus distribution.
Surprise in plain English
A 'surprise' is the gap between what an economic number (like a jobs or inflation report) actually came out as versus what experts had predicted on average beforehand. Markets don't really react to the number itself — they react to how far off the guess was, because the expected part is already baked into prices; only the shock moves things. It's like a class that already assumed a test would be hard: the real jolt comes from how much easier or harder it turns out than everyone braced for, often measured in how many 'standard' steps away from the forecast it landed.
