Upper Third Close
Volume Spread Analysis glossary · Effort vs Result & Spread/Close Analysis
Definition
A bar that closes in the top third of its range (above approximately 67% of the bar). In VSA, this closing position suggests buyers were dominant during the period, as they were able to push the price up and hold it near the highs despite any selling pressure.
Upper Third Close in plain English
Every bar has a high and a low, and the 'close' is just where price ended up when the period ran out. An upper-third close means it finished in the top slice of its range — up above roughly the 67% mark — which is a small detail that says a lot. It means that even if sellers pushed back during the period, buyers had enough muscle to shove price up and keep it pinned near the top by the final bell. Picture a game of tug-of-war ending with the flag way over on the buyers' side: whoever closes it near the highs was clearly the stronger team.
