Passage: Architecture is the ultimate expression of power, as it dictates the movement of bodies through space. The panopticon, Jeremy Bentham’s design for a circular prison, is the perfect metaphor for modern surveillance. In this structure, the inmates can never know when they are being watched, and so they must act as if they are always being watched. Surveillance becomes internalized; the prisoner becomes his own jailer. This principle now extends beyond prison walls into the digital architecture of the workplace and the city. We no longer need walls to contain people when we have the constant, unverifiable gaze of the data-stream.

In a workplace that implements an 'open door' policy to encourage transparency, how would the author likely interpret this from the perspective of the panopticon?

  1. As a genuine attempt to foster trust and mutual respect between employees and management.
  2. As a strategy to ensure that employees' behavior is constantly visible, leading to self-regulation.
  3. As a way to decrease the stress of employees by removing physical barriers to communication.
  4. As a sign that the workplace is moving away from the rigid structures of the 19th-century prison.
