Non-accidental trauma
NCLEX-RN glossary · Psychosocial Integrity
Definition
Injuries to a patient—most often pediatric—that are inconsistent with the provided clinical history or the patient's developmental capabilities, indicating potential abuse.
Non-accidental trauma in plain English
RNs are mandated reporters; failure to identify cues of non-accidental trauma and report them to the appropriate authorities can lead to further harm or death. The main trap is directly accusing the caregiver in a confrontational manner instead of focusing on the mandatory legal reporting and the immediate physical safety of the patient.
