Elect / election
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Civics
Definition
To choose by voting; the event of voting.
Elect / election in plain English
To elect someone means to choose them for a job or position by voting, and an election is the actual event where all that voting happens. It's how a democracy lets ordinary people, not a king, decide who gets power, kind of like a whole country voting for class president. In the U.S., citizens elect people like the president, senators, and mayors during regularly scheduled elections. The word "elect" is the action; "election" is the event.
