Definition
A government where the people elect representatives who follow a constitution.
Republic in plain English
A republic is a form of government where the people don't rule directly on everything — instead they elect representatives to make decisions for them, and those leaders must follow a set of written rules called a constitution. The key idea is that no leader is above the law, and power comes from the voters rather than from a king who inherits the throne. The United States is a republic: we pick people to govern, but the Constitution limits what they're allowed to do. It's like a sports league where even the star players and referees have to follow the same rulebook.
