Definition
The system by which men 18-25 register for a possible military draft.
Selective Service in plain English
Selective Service is the government system where nearly all men living in the U.S. sign up at age 18 (they can register up to 25) so the country has a list of people it could call into the military if there were ever a huge emergency and a "draft" — forced military service — became necessary. Right now the U.S. military is all-volunteer, so registering does NOT mean you'll be made to serve; it's more like putting your name on a just-in-case roster. Think of it as a fire department keeping a contact list of everyone in town — most people never get called, but the list has to exist first. For immigrants, signing up on time matters because it can affect citizenship and other benefits.
