Definition
A member of the Senate - two per state.
Senator in plain English
A senator is one of the lawmakers who serves in the Senate, and the key fact to remember is that each state — no matter its size — elects exactly two of them, for 100 senators in all. They're voted in by the people of their whole state to help write national laws, approve top government officials, and represent that entire state's interests. Think of each state sending two delegates to a national meeting where those two speak for everyone back home. Because there are only two per state and terms last six years, a single senator carries a lot of weight.
