Definition
The right to vote - the women's movement's goal.
Suffrage in plain English
Suffrage is just a fancy old word for the right to vote, to have a say in who runs the government. It matters because for most of history huge groups of people were locked out: women couldn't vote in national elections until 1920, and Black Americans faced barriers for even longer. When people talk about the 'women's suffrage movement,' they mean the decades-long fight women waged to win that right. Think of it as earning a seat at the table where the big decisions get made.
