Veto
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Civics
Definition
The President's power to reject a bill passed by Congress.
Veto in plain English
A veto is the President's power to say "no" to a bill that Congress has passed, stopping it from becoming a law, at least for the moment. It's a built-in check so that one branch of government can't just do whatever it wants, kind of like a parent refusing to sign a permission slip. Congress can still fight back and override the veto if enough members vote for the bill again, but the veto forces everyone to pause and reconsider. On the test, just remember: veto = the President rejecting a law Congress wanted.
