Walk-forward testing

Volume Profile Analysis glossary · Volume Profile Technicals

Definition

A backtesting protocol in which the strategy is repeatedly re-fitted on a rolling in-sample window and tested on the subsequent out-of-sample window; the sequence of OOS performances gauges robustness.

Walk-forward testing in plain English

Before betting real money on a trading strategy, you want proof it works on more than the one stretch of history you happened to tune it on. Walk-forward testing does this honestly: you fit the strategy on an early chunk of data, then test it on the NEXT chunk it has never seen, then slide the window forward and repeat. It's like studying from last week's practice problems and then being quizzed on brand-new ones — if you keep scoring well on the fresh material, the skill is real and not just memorization. A strategy that only shines on the data it was built on, but flops on each new window, gets exposed.
