Rule

Elliott Wave Theory glossary · Core Axioms & Motive Wave Rules

Definition

An inviolable condition that must be satisfied for a wave count to be valid. Violation of a rule requires count revision.

Rule in plain English

In Elliott Wave Theory a rule is a hard, no-exceptions law: if the way you've labeled the waves breaks it, your labeling is simply wrong and you have to redo it. Think of it like a move in chess that the rules flat-out forbid, no matter how good it looks, it's not allowed. This is what keeps the whole method honest, because without unbreakable rules you could bend the pattern to fit any chart. Rules are stricter than mere guidelines (called 'guidelines'), which usually hold but can occasionally bend.
