Affidavit
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Course Foundations
Definition
A written statement sworn true.
Affidavit in plain English
An affidavit is a statement you write down and then swear is true, usually in front of an official like a notary. The swearing part is what makes it powerful: it turns your words into something you can be legally punished for if you lied, so courts and USCIS can trust it almost like testimony given in person. Think of it as a promise in writing with your honesty on the line. On your citizenship journey you might submit one to confirm a fact, like proving where you lived or that a marriage was real.
