Appoint
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Course Foundations
Definition
To choose someone for a position (not by election).
Appoint in plain English
To appoint means a person in power picks someone for a job directly, instead of letting the public vote for them. Think of a team captain choosing who plays which position rather than the whole class voting on it. In the U.S. government, for example, the President appoints judges and Cabinet members, and the Senate then approves them. It matters because it's one of the main ways big jobs in government get filled without an election.
