Definition
Ordered to leave the country.
Deported / removed in plain English
To be deported (the official word is "removed") means the U.S. government legally orders you to leave the country and sends you out — usually because you broke immigration or other laws. Think of it as being told you can no longer stay in the house, and being escorted to the door. This matters for the citizenship test because becoming a citizen protects you from being deported, while non-citizens can face it. If your N-400 asks whether you've ever been ordered removed, answer honestly — hiding it causes far bigger problems.
