Exemption
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Course Foundations
Definition
Freedom from a requirement.
Exemption in plain English
An exemption is an official 'you don't have to do this' pass — freedom from a rule that normally applies to everyone else. For example, if a class requires a fee but some students qualify for an exemption, those students simply don't have to pay it. On the citizenship test, certain applicants can qualify for exemptions from parts of the English or civics requirements based on age and years as a resident.
