Freedom of the press
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Course Foundations
Definition
The right of newspapers and media to publish without government control.
Freedom of the press in plain English
This is the right of newspapers, TV, websites, and reporters to share news and opinions without the government controlling, approving, or censoring what they publish. The 'press' just means the news media. Why care? Because when journalists can freely report on those in power, ordinary people can learn the truth and hold leaders accountable, even when the story makes the government look bad. Imagine if the principal got to delete any school-newspaper article criticizing the school; a free press means no one gets that veto.
