Govern / government
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Course Foundations
Definition
To rule; the system that rules.
Govern / government in plain English
To 'govern' means to run or rule a place, making the decisions and rules that keep it working; the 'government' is the group of people and offices that do that job. In the U.S., that includes things like the President, Congress, courts, and your local city hall. Picture the referees, rule-makers, and organizers of a huge sports league all rolled together: they set the rules, settle disputes, and keep the whole thing running. The American system is special because the people choose their government through voting.
