Impeach

U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · Course Foundations

Definition

To formally charge a government official with wrongdoing.

Impeach in plain English

To impeach means to formally accuse a government official — like a president or a judge — of serious wrongdoing while they're in office. Here's the part people mix up: impeaching is only the charge, like a grand jury saying "there's enough here to put you on trial" — it does NOT by itself remove the person from their job. After the House impeaches, the Senate holds the actual trial and votes on whether to convict and kick them out. So impeachment is the accusation, not the punishment.
