Definition
To formally ask the government - a First Amendment freedom.
Petition in plain English
To petition means to formally ask the government to do something or to fix something — like signing a request to change a law, or writing to a lawmaker. It's one of the freedoms protected by the First Amendment, which means the government is not allowed to punish you for asking or complaining. Picture being able to knock on the principal's door and say "this rule is unfair, please change it" without getting in trouble for asking — that's the idea, scaled up to the whole country.
