Anomaly
Volume Price Analysis glossary · Validation Vs. Anomaly (Spread & Volume)
Definition
A divergence between volume and price action, where effort does not match result. Signals a potential change in market direction.
Anomaly in plain English
An anomaly is when the effort and the result don't match — a red flag that something's off. In volume-price analysis, volume is the effort (how much buying/selling energy went in) and the price move is the result (how far price actually traveled). If you see a massive burst of volume but price barely moves — huge effort, tiny result — that mismatch is the anomaly, like flooring the gas pedal but the car creeps forward, telling you something (or someone) is resisting. These mismatches often warn that the current trend is running out of fuel and direction may be about to change.
