Congestion Zone

Volume Price Analysis glossary · Validation Vs. Anomaly (Spread & Volume)

Definition

A horizontal range in which the price oscillates between a defined ceiling and floor; created by the competing emotions of fear and greed.

Congestion Zone in plain English

Sometimes a price stops trending and just bounces sideways, like a ball trapped between a floor and a ceiling — that trapped range is a congestion zone. It happens because two crowds are tugging equally hard: buyers are hopeful (greed) so they won't let price fall past the floor, while sellers are worried (fear) so they won't let it rise past the ceiling. Think of a tug-of-war where neither team can win — the rope stays in the middle. These zones matter because when price finally breaks out of one, it often signals which crowd won and where price is headed next.
