Tick Volume

Volume Price Analysis glossary · Volume Price Analysis

Definition

The number of price changes per period; used as a proxy for actual volume in the spot FX market.

Tick Volume in plain English

In a normal market you can see the real volume — the actual number of shares that changed hands. But the spot foreign-exchange (currency) market is spread across the whole world with no single exchange counting every trade, so nobody can hand you a true volume number. Tick volume is the clever workaround: instead of counting trades, it counts how many times the price changed (each change is a 'tick') during a period. The logic is simple — when tons of people are trading, the price flickers and updates constantly, so lots of price changes usually means lots of activity. It's a stand-in, not the exact truth, but it tracks real volume closely enough to be trusted.
