Trend Invalidation
Volume Price Analysis glossary · Volume Price Analysis
Definition
When volume signature contradicts the trend (declining volume on impulse, rising volume on pullback) — the trend is hollow and reversal-prone.
Trend Invalidation in plain English
In volume analysis, a healthy trend should be backed by the right volume 'signature' — heavy trading when price pushes in the trend's direction, light trading when it pauses. Trend invalidation is when you see the OPPOSITE: the push in the trend's direction happens on weak, fading volume, while the small pullbacks against it come on rising volume. That mismatch means the crowd isn't really committed to the trend and big money may be leaning the other way — the trend is 'hollow' and likely to reverse. It's like a cheering section that gets quieter for the home team and louder for the visitors: the scoreboard may still favor the home team, but the energy has already flipped.
