Retail Trader (Dumb Money)
Volume Price Analysis glossary · Climactic Price Action & Reversal Dynamics
Definition
Predominantly emotional, less-informed participants who tend to buy late (FOMO) and sell late (panic) — the counter-party to Smart Money.
Retail Trader (Dumb Money) in plain English
'Retail traders,' sometimes bluntly called 'dumb money,' are everyday individuals trading with their own small accounts — no inside edge, mostly running on emotion. The pattern is that they buy AFTER a stock has already rocketed up (fear of missing out) and sell AFTER it has already crashed (panic) — basically buying high and selling low, the opposite of what works. They're the natural counter-party to 'smart money,' the big informed institutions who are calmly selling to them at the top and buying from them at the bottom. The label isn't an insult about intelligence — it's about being late and emotional, which is exactly what VPA trains you to stop doing.
