Short Squeeze
Volume Price Analysis glossary · Climactic Price Action & Reversal Dynamics
Definition
A rapid price rise caused by short sellers being forced to buy back their positions; creates high-volume up candles that may be temporary rather than signalling a genuine reversal.
Short Squeeze in plain English
Some traders bet that a price will FALL — they "short" it, meaning they borrow shares, sell them now, and plan to buy them back cheaper later to pocket the difference. A short squeeze is what happens when the price rises instead: those traders start losing money fast, panic, and are forced to buy back to close their bets — but buying is exactly what pushes the price UP even more, so they trip over each other in a stampede. It's like everyone rushing for the exit of a crowded room and jamming the doorway — the crush is real but brief. For Anna Coulling's volume-price analysis, the lesson is that the huge up-candles it creates come from forced panic-buying, not genuine demand, so the rally can fizzle out once the trapped shorts are done.
