Tick Chart
Volume Price Analysis glossary · Volume Price Analysis
Definition
A chart where each candle represents a fixed number of transactions (ticks) rather than a fixed time period.
Tick Chart in plain English
Most charts draw a new candle every fixed slice of TIME — one per minute, one per hour, and so on. A tick chart throws out the clock and draws a new candle every time a fixed NUMBER of trades happens (say, every 500 transactions), no matter how long that takes. Think of it like taking a photo every 500 people through a turnstile instead of every 10 minutes: when a crowd rushes in, you snap lots of photos fast; when it's quiet, photos come slowly. For a volume trader this is handy because it packs the most detail into the busiest, most important moments and doesn't waste candles on dead periods.
