Pain trade

Volume Profile Analysis glossary · Profile Anatomy & Volume Nodes

Definition

The market direction that inflicts maximum loss on the dominant positioning; tends to be the direction of largest move on contrary surprises.

Pain trade in plain English

The 'pain trade' is the direction that would hurt the most people at once — specifically the crowd that's leaning hardest one way. Because so many are positioned the same way, a surprise pushing against them forces a stampede of exits, and all those forced trades pile on to make the move even bigger and faster. It's the classic 'everyone crammed on one side of the boat' problem: the tip nobody's braced for is exactly the tip that capsizes the most people, which is why markets so often lurch in the direction that inflicts maximum regret.
